Cultivated meat pioneers Aleph Pharms announced a long-term agreement with Thermo Fisher Scientific, a world leader in scientific materials, instruments, and services, to establish a supply chain for growth media. Partnership will be Farmed meat production is cost effective as food is essential for cell proliferation and growth.

“Across cellular agriculture, there is a massive need for predictable, cost-effective supply of growth media,” said Noah Avigdor, head of global supply chain and manufacturing at Aleph Farms.

Commercialization of cultured meat is hindered by the expensive production costs of specialized growth media for cell culture, which is a significant challenge for the industry.

The new agreement will allow Thermo Fisher Scientific to manufacture some of Aleph Pharm’s formulations for growth media and become an industry supplier, furthering Aleph Pharm’s mission to provide solutions that benefit the entire sector.

Aleph Pharms’ previous collaboration with Walker Biotech to provide food-grade growth medium protein also aims to remove significant cost barriers in the industry.

Achieving value-parity

Aleph Farms unveiled the world’s first farmed thin-cut steak in 2018 and the first farmed ribeye steak in 2021. The company’s whole-animal approach aims to create various cuts of steak and other products from animal cells with cultivated collagen.
