Best Homemade Guacamole (In 10 Minutes!)

This is beyond doubt the BEST homemade guacamole recipe on the web and is made with juicy avocados, lime juice, cilantro, garlic, and salt.

Not only do we love eating homemade guacamole with salty tortilla chips, but it’s also a favorite topping, dip, and spread for so many of our favorite dishes like chicken burritos, steak fajitas, and rice bowls.

In 2015, Linley and I went on an incredible avocado tour in Uruapan, Mexico, where we learned all about avocados – how to grow them, how they’re processed and shipped around the world, etc. More importantly, we learned how to make them uses avocados to make guacamole from the real experts – the people of Mexico.

Although our recipe is very similar to real guacamole, there is one big difference: We don’t use garlic and our friends from Uruapan don’t.

I was surprised too…mainly because I add garlic to everything. Nonetheless, this really is the Best Guacamole Recipe and I can’t wait for you to make it.

What you need for homemade guacamole

Avocado: Ripe avocados are the key to amazing guacamole! Squeeze your avocados a little, they should be slightly soft but not too mushy. Do you have extra avocado? Learn how to freeze avocados HERE.

Coriander: Love or hate cilantro? Cilantro is a key flavor in homemade guacamole. Be sure to use freshly chopped cilantro, as dried cilantro just isn’t the same.

Garlic: Our signature guacamole recipe is made with 3 cloves of garlic. Feel free to use about a tablespoon of pre-chopped garlic if you have that instead.

Red onion: I LOVE raw onions and this recipe calls for just a little bit of chopped red onion. It goes far!

lime juice: A bit of fresh citric acid will really make your guacamole shine. Be sure to use the real stuff, from the fruit, not the bottle!

Sea-salt: Getting the salt in guacamole just right is very important. If it’s under-salted, you won’t be able to taste all the fresh flavors and if it’s over-salted, well, nobody wants to eat it!

How do you know if your avocados are ripe?

The best way to tell if your avocados are ripe isn’t actually by feeling, but by judging how easily the stem at the top comes off. If you can remove it easily then you know it’s ripe!

If you want to go by feel, you can do that too! If it’s rock hard, it’s definitely not time to make guacamole. When it’s muddy, it’s too late. But when it’s slightly soft and still holding its shape, then you know it’s time!

How to cut an avocado for guacamole

Before you can make a large batch of delicious homemade guac, you have to do it secure Cut into the avocados to cut out the flesh. Here’s how we cut our avocados for guac:

  1. Halve the avocado lengthways.
  2. Twist the avocado apart so that one half has the avocado pit and the other is empty.
  3. Put a towel in your hand and then hold half of the avocado with the pit in the middle.
  4. Using a knife, gently (but firmly) press the knife into the pit of the avocado. Rotate the pit and pull.
  5. The avocado pit should easily pop out of the avocado half.
  6. Discard the avocado pit and use the pitted avocado for guacamole.

How to make guacamole

Once all of your ingredients are prepped and ready, all you need is a large bowl and you’re ready to make homemade guacamole!

Prepare avocados

Halve the avocados and remove the stone with a knife. Then use a spoon to scoop out the pulp. Transfer to a bowl and mash the avocado with a fork.

Add flavors

Next, add fresh cilantro, minced garlic, chopped red onion, lime juice, jalapeño, and sea salt to the mashed avocado. Mix everything together until combined.

Don’t forget to taste!

Make sure you taste your guacamole as this is where you add more lime juice and/or salt.

Keep in mind that you can’t take these two ingredients away, so it’s best if you’re in season from the start!

Guacamole Variations

Sharp: Add chopped jalapeños or even a serrano pepper to add some kick to your guacamole. We recommend slowly starting with 1/2 medium jalapeño and then adding more from there.

Mango Guacamole: Spice up your savory guacamole with something sweet! Add about 1/2 cup of diced fresh mango to your guacamole for a tropical flavor.

Chunky Guacamole: If you’re a lover of all things chunky, try adding some diced tomatoes to your guacamole and keeping the avocados a little chunkier for a chunky-style guacamole.

Ways to prevent guacamole from turning brown

There are several ways you can prevent your guac from turning brown!

  1. Before storing, place the avocado seed in the guacamole. This actually helps prevent the guac from oxidizing.
  2. Squeeze in a little more lime juice. The citrus fruits will help keep it from turning brown.
  3. After placing the guacamole in a glass container, press a piece of plastic wrap into the guacamole. This will prevent air from coming into contact with the guacamole and prevent it from browning.

Homemade Guacamole Recipe

Homemade guacamole is ready in under 10 minutes and is made with ripe avocado, lime juice, onion, garlic and fresh cilantro.

  • 3 big avocados ripe
  • 3 cloves Garlic crushed and chopped (~1.5 tablespoons)
  • 1/4 medium red onion finely diced
  • 1 medium lime juiced (or more, to taste)
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea-salt or more, to taste
  • 2 tablespoon fresh coriander chopped
  • optional: 1/2 large jalapenos finely diced


  • First remove the pits from your avocados, then scoop out the flesh and place in a medium-sized bowl. Mash the avocado flesh with a fork until smooth. Alternatively, you can leave a few pieces if you prefer a chunkier guacamole.

  • Next, add minced garlic, finely diced onion, lime juice, sea salt, and cilantro and mix until well combined.

  • Taste test the guacamole and adjust the salt and lime juice as needed.

  • Serve with your favorite tortilla chips.

Tips & Hints

  • Storage: We recommend eating guacamole immediately after preparing it. However, if you have leftovers, place the guacamole in a medium bowl and squeeze some lime juice on top. Then cover it with a piece of plastic wrap, removing as much air as possible. Store in the fridge for 2-3 days.
