Store-bought spiced nuts are often loaded with added fats, sugar, and salt. Instead, you can just create one healthier alternative by preparing them yourself as you have complete control over the ingredients.
In this recipe, we coated cashews with a Glaze of spiced honey, which we prepared with a mixture of turmeric, cinnamon and cardamom. Then we gently roasted them until super crispy and caramelized. So delicious!
Unlike other roasted nut recipes, ours is oil free and salt free. Cashews are already high in healthy fats, and the turmeric spice blend adds so much flavor without the need for salt. Plus, we used less than half a teaspoon of honey per serving to keep sugar down. If you wish, you can substitute it with maple syrup to make this recipe vegan.
Honey is a better alternative to refined white sugar because it has a lower glycemic index (GI), which means it doesn’t spike blood sugar levels as quickly. It also has fewer carbohydrates and therefore fewer calories than white sugar. And it’s tastier!
These cashews roasted in honey make one fantastic topping for yoghurt, smoothie bowls and morning oatmeal. We also like to sprinkle them on ice cream and pancakes. At just 140 calories, a 25g (1 oz) serving covers 16% RDI of fats and only 4% of the RDI of sugar.
