This past weekend, Athens-based Jackie O’s Brewery finally opened its downtown Columbus outpost! The new brewery and taproom, located at 171 N. Front St., occupies the site of the former Elevator Brewing.
Jackie O’s gave the building a complete overhaul, transforming the interior space into a beautiful bar and bottle shop, while adding 8000 square feet of patios spread over two levels.
They have really done an excellent job with the outdoor spaces, dividing them into different areas while creating different styles of seating, from four table tables and booth tables…
…in longstanding bars…
…in fire pits with Adirondack chairs, in small alcoves with cushioned seats or rocking benches.
They really haven’t lost a square inch, and what could have been just open concrete pads have been transformed into comfortable and dynamic spaces.
And they put the beer at your disposal. In addition to the interior bar, both exterior levels have their own bars. Printed menus indicate which beers and cocktails are available at each bar.
I appreciated that each beer is available in different sizes; I found myself sampling a few different four-ounce servings of everything from double IPAs to barrel-aged stouts to pale ales.
Currently, another Athens classic, Bagel Street Deli, has parked a trailer next to the patio so you can order bagel sandwiches to go with your beer. You can read more about the cart and its offers here! And the Wario’s Beef & Pork team is working on a new concept to potentially open in June.
And throughout the space you’ll find small reminders of his Athenian roots.
The indoor area is just as impressive. Near the front door on Fourth Street is a retail shop, while most of the space consists of a high bar and a mix of tables and booths.
If you’re not a beer fan, you’ll still find reasons to visit Jackie O’s, with its small but interesting cocktail menu.

Jackie O’s is currently open Friday and Saturday from 3pm to 11pm and Sunday from 11am to 5pm.
