Ditch the pre-made packets and make this super easy homemade taco seasoning! Simply combine and add to 1 to 2 pounds of cooked ground beef, turkey, or chicken for tacos. This recipe makes about 4 tablespoons, or the equivalent of 2 store-bought poultices. Feel free to double or triple it.
If I had a dollar for every time I make this homemade taco seasoning, I would be vacationing in Greece right now.
I made a single batch at first, and then refilled my designated “taco seasoning jar” every two weeks. As that got old I got wiser and now make a triple batch. You can use this homemade taco seasoning for many things. Recipes like chili, regular and double decker tacos, 7 layer taco dip, Mexican beef stir fry with cheese or chili.
So why bother buying a pre-made taco mix with additives and preservatives added, and who knows what else, when you can make your own that’s a million times better than any package?
TO make THIS Homemade Taco Seasoning you will need:
- chili powder (regular or ancho chili) – Adds flavor and can be mild to moderately hot.
- cumin (Floor) – Imparts earthiness and warmth with a hint of citrus.
- kosher salt – Enhances the flavors of the spices.
- ground black pepper – Adds some subtle bite and flavor.
- paprika – Adds color and subtle flavor.
- oregano (dried) – Imparts an earthy and slightly bitter taste.
- garlic powder – Adds flavor that’s sweeter yet milder than fresh garlic.
- onion powder – Adds a strong onion flavor.
- red pepper flakes – For a spicy kick.
What are the best spices for making your own spices and spice blends?
There is no right or wrong brand. I will say first, buy what you can afford. However, not all spices are created equal as you usually get what you pay for. I am currently using Morton & Bassett (not sponsored) because I find their spices to be top notch in texture, color and flavor. I love and respect what your company stands for not only with community service but also with quality control. Some other wonderful brands I’ve used over the years are Simple Organic, Frontier Co-op, and Penzys.

Stir well to combine.
That’s it, my friends! Now you have taco seasoning at hand and ready to use in all of your favorite taco-inspired recipes. Because homemade taco seasoning is the best taco seasoning!
