Peanut butter yogurt dip with pretzels

As our children grow older, snacking is a major topic of discussion. It’s especially difficult to find healthy snacks that both kids eat, but this peanut butter yogurt dip is always a hit. I make a batch of this for an afternoon snack and it’s gone in a day or two.

I’ve made a few different versions of these snacks over the years trying to figure out how to get the yogurt mixture to stick well to the pretzels. To be honest, nothing has really worked quite like the yogurt-dipped pretzels you find at the store. There are a few other folders and such in there.

Instead, I just make it into an easy peanut butter yogurt dip. This dip is made with just four ingredients and you can make one serving in minutes. It keeps great in the fridge, so I’d recommend just dunking the pretzels as needed! (Tip: Also ideal as an after-bed snack for adults!)

How to prepare this yogurt dip

Basically every ingredient in this dip is in the title. Start with a ripe banana and some creamy peanut butter and mash it all up with a fork.

Then add the yoghurt and mix with a hand mixer until smooth. It will be a little thick by this point, and adding a little powdered sugar makes it more of a dip, giving it a bit of sweetness to counteract the tangy yogurt. You can use between 1/2 and 1 cup of powdered sugar. Any more than that and it almost becomes a frosting.

Different ways to use this peanut butter yogurt dip

Ideally, I wanted it to somehow cling to the pretzels. It coats the pretzels very nicely and sticks to them perfectly.

My first thought was that maybe I could bake the pretzels at a really low temperature and dry the coating. I put them in the oven on low for 2 hours and it kind of worked. The pretzels have lost their great contrast of colors and textures and it’s also silly to leave the oven on for hours to make a snack in my opinion.

The next try was to freeze the pretzels!

This worked perfectly with one caveat. You have to keep them frozen. As soon as you take them out they will start to melt and you’ll quickly end up with a mess on your hands. I did like them cold though, especially on a hot summer day! If you want to freeze them, do so in an even layer on a baking sheet. You can then keep them in a bag and take out just a few at a time to snack on.

However, I eventually realized that the best way to eat this snack is to simply use it as a dip! Have people dip their own pretzels or dip a few and put them on a plate for a kid.

It’s a surprisingly delicious dip and any kid will love it. Once the dip is ready, you can easily store it in an airtight container in the fridge for a few days. Eventually the banana will turn a little brown and you may want to mix up a new batch.

I like to dip pretzels in this dip, but there are no rules here. A few other good things to dive into would be:

  • Crunchy fruits like apples or larger fruits to dip like strawberries.
  • Crackers or vanilla wafers or graham crackers

Substitute for this yogurt dip

Here are a few alternatives you could make to tweak this fruit dip.

  • Use another sweetener like maple syrup or honey.
  • Add small chocolate chips to give it a chocolaty touch
  • Sprinkle with chopped nuts for some bite
  • Instead of peanut butter, use other types of nut butters, such as almond butter
  • Give the dip a vanilla twist by using vanilla yoghurt or adding some vanilla extract

  • 1 banana

  • 1 Cup greek yogurt
  • 1 Cup powdered sugar
  • Mini Pretzels for dipping
  • In a medium bowl, mash the banana and peanut butter with a fork until smooth.

  • Add Greek yogurt and mix with a hand mixer until smooth. Then add powdered sugar (1/2 cup for a less sweet variant) and mix a second time until smooth.

  • Dip the pretzels in the dip. You can freeze the dipped pretzels, but you must keep them cold or they will melt. I personally just like to serve it as a dip and let people dip their own pretzels!
