If you’re like me, you probably have your own green smoothie recipe that you love and make often…but this is one recipe that I highly recommend adding to your rotation!

It has the consistency of a milkshake thanks to mine must-have smoothie combination: vegetable milk, nut butter and cinnamon. This combination creates a silky smooth texture and creamy richness, as well as providing additional nutrients such as healthy fats, fiber and protein.

Zucchini is great in smoothies because it has a mild flavor and when frozen, it blends silky smooth!

Tips for making the perfect smoothie at home

Frozen fruits and vegetables are key. I used to add whatever fresh fruit I had on hand, but really, using frozen produce like ripe bananas, chopped zucchini, frozen mango, berries, and even cauliflower can help take your smoothie to the next textural level. Frozen products will make the smoothie thicker, creamier and colder (obviously) and more like a smoothie.

Add fats like nuts, seeds, nut butter, coconut milk and avocado. Not only does this improve the texture, but adding healthy fats also makes a smoothie much more satisfying and well-balanced. I stay fuller for longer when my meals and snacks have a mix of high-fiber carbs, fats, and proteins, and smoothies are no exception.

Opt for baby spinach instead of kale. I LOVE kale (evidence here , here , and here ), but in this smoothie, the mild taste and softer texture of baby spinach is the way to go. It blends perfectly in my blender (I use this one) and you can’t taste it at all. Kale is great, but the flavor is a little stronger, so I save it for soups, salads, and pastas.

Healthy tip: Nuts and seeds also increase the fiber, protein and mineral content, so I love adding hemp seeds, pumpkin seeds, flax seeds, almonds or a Brazil nut before blending or on top of get some texture!

Spice it up! It may seem strange to add cinnamon to a smoothie, but it is SO tasty! I really think the cinnamon is a game changer in this smoothie recipe. This does pretty green smoothie taste like decadent candy.

  • banana – 1 very ripe banana, cut and frozen
  • Courgette – 1 small zucchini, cut and frozen (a baby zucchini about 6 inches long is perfect)
  • spinach – 2 large handfuls of baby spinach
  • Peanut or almond butter – 1 tablespoon full (I prefer salty)
  • Medjool date – 1 great date, chopped
  • Cinnamon – 1/2 teaspoon
  • vegetable milk – 1/2 cup (such as soy, almond, pea or oat)

Simply put all the ingredients in a high speed blender and mix a little more than you think you need. This is the trick!

Don’t just look to break down the ingredients. You want keep mixing them so that they come together and emulsify in the process. This will give you that incredibly smooth smoothie texture. I let it mix for about 30-40 seconds.

Frequently asked questions about the RECIPE

How can I make my smoothie thicker? If you want to make a smoothie bowl, instead of a drinkable smoothie, simply use less plant milk. Add a tablespoon or two to start and only add more if needed. This will create a thick, ice cream-like texture.

What if I have already added too much milk? If your smoothie is too thin, add some banana and zucchini. If you don’t have it on hand, try adding some avocado to thicken it up.

Can I add ice cubes to my smoothie? Many recipes call for ice cubes, but I find that you create a more watery, slushy kind of smoothie and the ice cubes can reduce the flavor as the smoothie melts. Also, I find that ice is unnecessary if you use frozen fruits and vegetables.

Is this smoothie a meal or a snack? It’s totally up to you, but I usually have a snack in the afternoon. It is a great recovery and very energizing. If I’m having it for breakfast, I’ll often pair it with avocado toast or a bowl of oatmeal, unless I’m in the mood for a really light breakfast. Again, it’s all personal preference, so always remember to eat until you’re full and satisfied and focus on counting colors, not calories 🙂
