Anyone who loves sushi will love it Bake sushi. A Casserole dish with sushi rice, cooked seafood, various vegetables and a variety of sauces and spices. It can be a popular alternative to traditional labor-intensive sushi rolls, especially for larger groups. Serve with a nice, crunchy Asian slaw for a great meal.

Ok, what is sushi bake?

Just think Bake sushi as a deconstructed California roll (or any sushi roll) that’s layered in a casserole dish and baked to caramel-like perfection!

To prepare sushi bake, place sushi roll layers in a casserole dish. Ingredients include seasoned sushi rice, nori (seaweed sheets) for the distinctive sushi flavor, cooked seafood combined with a delicious blend of cream cheese and mayonnaise. Garnish with sriracha mayonnaise and unagi before baking in the oven. Top the sushi casserole with a selection of fresh sushi vegetables. Anything you’ve seen on a sushi roll is fair game here, so let your imagination run wild!

Feel free to use whatever seafood you like. I chose imitation crab because the California roll is my favorite, but I also added cooked shrimp. You could use tuna or salmon instead.

In this recipe, you may have noticed a few ingredients that you are unfamiliar with… namely furikake and unagi. These are nothing to fear and can easily be found at almost any grocery store and of course online. Let me familiarize you!

What is Furikake?

Furikake is a Japanese spice that is a combination of seaweed, sesame seeds, and more. If you have a Kroger or Kroger Affiliate store near you, Simple Truth Organic has a Japanese-inspired sesame seaweed mix that’s perfect for this sushi casserole! Check out the condiments and/or Asian food section at your local grocery store. Walmart should also have some form of Furikake.

What is unagi sauce?

Sometimes referred to as eel sauce because it is used as a sauce for grilled eel, Unagi is not made from eel at all. It’s a combination of Soy sauce, sake, sugar and mirin. And it’s absolutely delicious when drizzled and baked into this casserole, giving it its caramel finish, so don’t skip it.

How to bake sushi

Sushi Baking Ingredients

Preheat the oven + prepare the casserole dish

Preheat oven to 425°F. Prepare a 9×13 casserole dish with non-stick spray.

Make sushi rice

Location rice vinegar, sugar And Salt Heat in a saucepan and bring to the boil, stirring, until the sugar has dissolved.

Add to rinsed rice to the pot and the amount of Water the instructions on the package indicate this. Cook according to pack instructions.

Once the rice is fully cooked, remove from the heat and mix in Furikake And Sesame seeds. Press the rice mixture onto the bottom of the prepared casserole dish and spread evenly. Put aside.

Mix in a small bowl Cream cheese, crab, shrimp And mayonnaise and mix until well combined.

Bake + add toppings

Bake in the oven at 425°F for 15-20 minutes or until hot and caramel-like, being careful not to burn.

Let it rest for a few minutes before topping it Avocado, Cucumber, Green Onion, Furikake and more sauce if desired. Serve warm.

What to serve sushi bake

Sushi casserole can be served alone as a complete meal or as part of a larger selection of appetizers or main courses. Here are some suggestions of what to serve with sushi casserole:

  • salad: Since this dish can be very rich, a light crunchy salad is a great accompaniment to sushi casseroles.
  • Miso soup: A traditional Japanese soup is a perfect complement to the sushi casserole.
  • Edamame: Plain steamed young soybean pods would be another inviting accompaniment to sushi casserole.
  • Pickled Vegetables: Add a refreshing addition to the meal like pickled cucumbers, carrots or daikon radish.

Sushi casserole can be stored in the refrigerator up to 3 days, but it’s best to eat it sooner rather than later for optimal flavor and texture. Allow to cool to room temperature before placing in an airtight container and then refrigerating.

To warm up: Cover the pan with foil and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F for 10-15 minutes or until heated through. To reheat in the microwave, place a portion on a microwave-safe plate and heat on high for 1-2 minutes or until heated through.

note: I do not recommend freezing sushi casserole. It is best consumed fresh as the texture and flavor can be compromised.

  • Add the rinsed rice and the amount of water indicated on the packet instructions to the saucepan. Cook according to pack instructions.

  • Once the rice is fully cooked, remove from the heat and mix in the furikake and sesame seeds. Press the rice mixture onto the bottom of the prepared casserole dish and spread evenly. Put aside.

  • In a small bowl, combine cream cheese, crab, shrimp, and Japanese mayonnaise and mix until well combined.

  • Spread the nori over the rice in a single layer.

  • Pour the shrimp mixture over the nori and spread evenly with a rubber spatula.

  • Scatter the asparagus pieces evenly over the shrimp mixture.

  • Drizzle sriracha mayonnaise and unagi sushi sauce over casserole in a diangle pattern.

  • Bake in the oven at 425°F for 15-20 minutes or until hot and caramel-like, being careful not to burn.

  • Let sit for a few minutes before topping with avocado, cucumber, scallions, furikake, and more sauce if desired. Serve warm.
