Why We Love This Homemade Pizza Sauce Recipe

We’ve been making homemade pizza for years, but only recently started making our own pizza sauce. It just seemed like the crust and toppings were the stars, and the sauce played a supporting role that wasn’t worth the extra effort.

I was wrong.

After finding our cupboard with no sauce purchased, I quickly searched for homemade pizza sauce. After a bit of tweaking, I came up with a sauce that’s thick, full of flavor, easy to make, and uses pantry staples. And the classic flavor profile works deliciously well on pretty much every pizza we’ve tried it on! Trust me — it’s time to kick the store-bought sauce to the curb.

Ingredients for Homemade Pizza Sauce:

  • Crushed tomatoes– Shredded tomatoes add the perfect texture to your pizza sauce.
  • tomato paste– Tomato paste helps to thicken the sauce.
  • olive oil– Olive oil adds a smooth texture and delicious flavor.
  • Garlic– Fresh garlic is an essential ingredient – measure with your heart!
  • Sugar– Sugar helps balance the acidity of the tomatoes.
  • Italian spice– We have found that dried Italian spices give us the best taste.
  • onion powder– Since we didn’t want chunks of onion in our sauce, we used onion powder.
  • salt pepper– For seasoning. We used sea salt and freshly ground black pepper.

How to Make Homemade Pizza Sauce:

  1. Boil the garlic. Heat the olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Add the garlic and cook until the garlic is soft and fragrant, just a minute or two.
  2. Let the sauce simmer. Add the rest of the ingredients. Bring to a boil, then simmer for at least 10-15 to thicken the sauce and allow the flavors to meld.
  3. Spread on your pizza! Spread it on your pizza or use it as a dip! Leftovers can be kept in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or frozen for up to 3 months. Enjoy!

What is the difference between pizza sauce and marinara sauce?

Pizza sauce and marinara sauce are very similar and require many of the same ingredients. The main difference is in the texture. Pizza sauce is thicker than marinara sauce, so you get a thick layer of flavor on your pizza crust!

Can you substitute marinara sauce for pizza sauce?

Yes! You can also use marinara sauce instead of pizza sauce in a pinch. Because it’s thinner, you might not get quite the same overall flavor, but you’ll still end up with a delicious pizza.

Can I use tomato sauce instead of tomato passata?

You can substitute tomato sauce but the taste is not that good. We recommend sticking with crushed tomatoes.

  • 2 tablespoon olive oil or avocado oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 28 ounces may crushed tomatoes
  • 6 ounces may tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon Italian spice
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • In a deep skillet or saucepan, sauté olive oil and garlic over medium-high heat for 1-2 minutes, or just until garlic is soft and fragrant.

  • Add the remaining ingredients and stir to combine everything. Turn the heat down to medium-high until it begins to simmer, then reduce the heat to low and cover. Let it simmer for 10-15 minutes (you can let it simmer for up to an hour).

  • Remove from the stove and spread on the pizza dough. If you have more, you can store it in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or freeze it for up to 3 months. Simply store in an airtight container. Enjoy!
