Chocolate and peanut butter

Is there anything more magical than the flavor combination of chocolate and peanut butter? I don’t think there is. Reese knew what they were doing when they put these two together. Peanut butter cups were one of my favorite candies when I was a kid, and Justin’s Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups are my favorite now.

Vegan Chocolate Peanut Butter Smoothie

I know this chocolate peanut butter smoothie recipe is nothing short of groundbreaking. There are probably hundreds of vegan blogs with similar recipes. But this is an old favorite of mine that I’ve shared with health coaching clients and cooking class students in the past, and somehow, it never made it onto my blog. This is one that I often do during the summer months.

Making a smoothie in a blender

How to Make Chocolate Peanut Butter Smoothies

This recipe couldn’t be easier to make! You just throw all the ingredients together in your blender and blend until it’s smooth and creamy. It whips up in seconds in my Blendtec.

I love drinking smoothies for breakfast, so I put together smoothie bags to make things easier on myself in the morning. To make smoothie bags, you simply put all the ingredients in a bag, minus the liquid, and then dump it all into your blender in the morning. I like to use reusable silicone bags. The peanut butter in this recipe can make it a bit difficult, as it is very sticky. You can put everything else in your bag and add the peanut butter when you’re ready to make your drink.

Recipe notes

When you’re buying peanut butter, you should look for the natural kind that contains only nuts and possibly salt.

You can use raw cocoa powder or cocoa powder in this recipe. Cacao is made from my cold-pressed raw cacao beans and has many health benefits. It’s a bit pricey though. Cacao is roasted, so not as nutritious, but it’s just as delicious.

This smoothie is just as delicious with other nut butters, like almonds or cashews. If you don’t eat nuts, you can simply swap the peanut butter for sunflower seed butter or soy butter.

If you want your smoothie to be a little sweeter, you can add a tablespoon or two of maple syrup or agave.

Serve your smoothie

This smoothie tastes like dessert for breakfast. Of course, you can have it for dessert, if you’re craving chocolate after dinner. It also makes a great afternoon pick-me-up. Packed with good-for-you foods like bananas and spinach, it’s a big hit with clueless kids. Since it is high in protein, you can also drink it as a post-workout protein shake.
